YouTube Music allows background music to be played back for free on its site, but there is a catch

Google has revealed that it will roll out background music for YouTube Music accounts. Canada is the first country to receive this functionality without the need for a subscription. Prior to this update music playback was blocked for anyone with a free membership. You could switch to another application or lock your phone to stop the music from playing. This was a major problem as you could not reply to texts or surf without affecting music playback. YouTube’s official YouTube Blog stated that the company is implementing this move in response to user feedback.

YouTube Music Background playsback for non-premium accounts

YouTube Music is now catching up to Spotify, which had a similar feature in the beginning. Spotify has recently introduced video podcasts, a move that is similar to YouTube. It even signed exclusive agreements with well-known podcasters such as Joe Rogan in order to get them off Google’s platform.

YouTube Music gives you free access to over 70,000,000 songs. You have the option to choose from thousands upon thousands of playlists, which can be broken down into different categories. You can access quick shortcuts to music for workouts or relaxation. Discover Mix allows you to discover new content. The free version includes audio ads, and the free version can be ad-supported.
